Chile 2020

Chile is a spectacularly beautiful country with varied climate systems, incredible landscapes and snowcapped volcanoes. From desert landscapes to the beautiful lush lake district. Santiago is where I began my journey it is a cultural city.  I felt safe wherever I walked. Great shopping and restaurants.  The lake district was beautiful and I loved my lodge.  We went volcano climbing, horseback riding, rafting down the Trancura river.  There also is white water rafting which I did not do.  Atacama, the landscape all I can say is it is red.  Very dry, great hiking, El Tatio is about 90 minutes from San Pedro and absolutely worth the trip.  We went early morning before sunrise.  I didn’t realize it would be so cold about a 40 degree difference from where we were staying.  Needless to say I had to buy a jacket and of course they had Patagonia coats.  I still take the same coat on all my trips when I’m not sure what the weather will be.  It folds up to nothing. The geysers were incredible I have never seen anything like it and the sunrise took your breath away.

I thought the food was great everywhere I went.  Every table had a spice called merquen, it’s a smoked chili spice. I  brought some home and I am still ordering it on Amazon.  I use it in so much of my cooking. Chile is known for its wine and it was terrific.  We did do wine tastings at a vineyard and lunch so much fun.  We also had a dinner at a chef’s home in Santiago she had won what is our equivalent of Master Chef but of Chile.  It really was a delightful evening.

Accommodation

In Santiago I stayed at the Ritz Carlton great location in the El Golf neighborhood. Spa on the top floor with a pool overlooking the city. Nearby wonderful restaurants, great shopping. The Pucon area or Chile's Lake district is where our group stayed next. We were at andbeyond Vira Vira a beautiful lodge on an organic farm. Lush surroundings and very green. Then we went to Atacama, gateway to wonders of the central desert. We stayed at Alto Atacama a very different location at the base of the Salt Mountains. The lodge melts into the scenery almost looking like it is part of the rock formations.

1. Tips

Bring a warm jacket especially if you are going to the geysers.

It is very dusty and dry in the Atacama area bring eye drops.

2. Packing Tips

Packing on this trip was fairly easy very few luggage restrictions.  50 pounds maximum and 17 pounds carry on.

Bring a few nice things to wear at night, especially in Santiago.  When there are few restrictions I always try to bring a few dresses that don’t wrinkle.

Currency: The official currency of Chile is the Chilean peso (CLP). 1 CLP is equivalent to 0.0012 USD.

Air Travel: LAN airlines JFK to Santiago a 10.5 hour flight. Same on the way home to JFK.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Most Chilean shops, restaurants, and hotels accept credit cards, bring 2 so you always have a backup.  I exchanged money at the hotel. Just to have a little local currency.

Final thoughts

This was another Abercrombie & Kent tour. There were 11 of us on this trip. For me traveling by myself I love the smaller groups that this tour operator offers.  It can’t be more than 18 people.  I have never had that many the maximum was 15.

I love the tour operators that they hire, we had Alicia Carolina Rojas Bravo. She is a native of Santiago, completed a mountaineering course at 17, studied tourism, graduate study in hospitality in English she began as an outdoor guide. I could go on and on but they hire people that know what they are doing. They know their flora and fauna, she even had a degree in bird watching.

Chile is beautiful I do want to go back, next time Patagonia. The hiking was fun, they always had an easier hike and a harder one.  Everyone could participate.
