India Wildlife Safari 2023

I arrived in New Delhi, India and was met by my A & K representative.  They really are wonderful you don’t have to worry about anything. It is a 14hour plane ride and I had the next day to myself.  I booked a tour through Viator I wanted to see more of Delhi because the trip predominately a safari. I was picked up at my hotel the Taj Palace and taken through the city with various stops.  I wanted to see the spice market, visit a few stores for souvenirs.

The next morning we all met at 8A for a welcome briefing. We began our tour, a visit to the Jama Masjid the largest mosque in India. We rode on a rickshaw through the alleys of Chandni Chowk bazaar one of the oldest markets in New Delhi.  We saw the presidential residence.  That night we had our welcome dinner. We did an overland trip to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal. Beautiful monument almost looks perfectly proportioned.  The artisan work was incredible.

We flew to Jabalpur, then drove to Kanha, one of the most famous national parks in India. Our lodge, Banjaar Tola was on the Banjar river overlooking the park. I had a tented suite with a bamboo deck overlooking the river. In the morning we started our safari seeing various exotic birds, mammals but no sighting of the elusive bengal tiger. We were here for two nights and two days of exploring the park.

We drove to our next park, Bandhavgarh National park to continue our explorations looking for different animals and of course the bengal tiger. Here I finally saw the elusive bengal tiger.  Truly majestic animal.  The deer alerted us that a predator was nearby.  They stay as a herd facing their predator and bark.  Very loud. We saw many different types of birds, deer, jackals that were mated.  So beautiful.

1. Packing Tips

Where loose comfortable clothing, that can be layered if needed.  Morning game drives it can be quite chilly.  I always bring some sort of fleece. Evenings smart casual is appropriate nothing formal is needed. Temples and other religious sited require covered shoulders, knees, nothing sleeveless. Always have a pair of socks with you to enter you have to take off your shoes.

Also a hat is a must the sun is very strong here.  Suntan lotion is needed.

2.  Tips

On internal flights in economy you are allowed one bag no more than 35 pounds.  Carry on your are allowed one bag no more than 15 pounds.  All the lodges will do laundry.  Sometimes they will not was women’s underwear.

Also most bathrooms do not have toilet paper so always have tissues with you. Warning in the parks the bathrooms may be a hole in the floor.

Currency: The official currency of India is the rupee. 1 Indian rupee is equal to .012 US dollars.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Many Indian shops, restaurants, and hotels accept credit cards. Even the open markets most would accept a credit card.

Final thoughts

I am glad I saw India, The Taj Mahal amazing and seeing the Bengal tiger were the highlights for me. Would I ever go back no I wouldn’t the streets have garbage everywhere no one picks up anything. Their hygiene definitely different from ours.

Their TSA or the equivalent I thought were horrible and felt like they were targeting Americans. One airport I was two pounds over and said I would have to pay extra. Our guide took care of it.  They searched my suitcase, carry-on, they searched me each time I went through, patting me down then   went through the  metal detector.  I watched they didn’t do this to their people. Not warm and friendly at all.

The meals were goods but they needed more variety.  If I saw chicken curry one more time I was going to scream. Their lamb was good.

I loved our group the people are what make these trips so enjoyable.
