Patagonia: The Last Wilderness 2024

I arrived in Buenos Aires two days early.  I had booked a tour of the city for the next day. Saw a lot of the city and La Ricoleta cemetary where Eva Peron is buried. Met a nice couple at the hotel that I went to dinner with right across the street.  Our official tour began the next day.  I went back to most of the places I have been but went to La Boca, Caminito street.  Had lunch and watched a tango dance. Entertaining.

The next day we flew to Ushuaia, at the very tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego. A very remote part of South America. Went to Estancia farm, a National historical monument. We hiked around the area, watched sheep sheering, dined at the farm on the lamb they had cooked. Great experience landscape beautiful.

Accommodation

Buenos Aires we stayed in the Four Season Hotel, Buenos Aires. It was a former Belle Epoque mansion, near shopping, restaurants. Two restaurants and a very nice bar, large pool, spa, fitness room. I enjoyed staying here. In Ushuaia, the Arakur Ushuaia Resort and Spa felt like I was in a beautiful lodge. The views from the rooms, the restaurant and bar were beautiful. Comfortable hotel overlooking Beagle Channel. modern decor, spa, trails, fitness center, hot tubs. In El Calafate our accommodation was Hotel Posada Los Alamos. Fair hotel rooms were very small not air conditioned it was warm. My least favorite of the trip but really no place else to stay. We drove from El Calafate to Puerto Natales, Chile. We stayed at the Singular Patagonia. I have to say one of my all time favorite hotels because of the views. We flew to Santiago stayed at the Ritz Carlton, Santiago. I had stayed here when I went on my Chile trip. Nice hotel centrally located in the El Golf neighborhood. Spa, fitness center, indoor pool. 30 minutes from the airport which is very convenient.

1. Hiking

We did a lot of walking/ hiking bring comfortable broken in boots or walking hiking shoes.

2. Packing Tips

Very casual dressing, lots of walking, hiking, long bus rides and air flights. Be comfortable.

Currency: The official currency of Argentina is the Argentine Peso (ARS). 1 Peso is equivalent to 0.0012 USD

The official currency of Chile is the Chilean Peso (CLP). 1 Peso is equivalent to 0.0010 USD

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are pretty much accepted everywhere in Argentina and Chile.  Most of the time they prefer if you give them USD instead of their currency.

Final thoughts

I loved this trip just for the beauty of the landscape.  Really amazing view, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, mountains.  It was fun being in the southern most part of the world Tierra del Fuego which is in Chile and Argentina. The southern portion is Cape horn know as the southern most part of the continent.  They will give your passport a special stamp that says you were there.

This was an active trip we were outside a lot which was great.  So enjoyed the hiking and seeing Patagonia.
